How to walk the Brooklyn Bridge

Brooklyn Bridge, New York

May 24, 2016

After visiting Bite Lip Lab on our last day in New York, we had to try to fit in the Brooklyn Bridge. I had wanted to cross the bridge on the Monday as it was a lovely and sunny day, but shopping overtook my plans, what can you do eh? So Tuesday was our last day and so it had to be done. On my last couple of trips to New York I never did the Brooklyn Bridge or the Highline so this trip, both had to happen.

Brooklyn Bridge - how to cross it and how long does it take?

I wasn’t quite sure how long it took to cross the Brooklyn Bridge, for some reason I had a few hours in my head, I’m not sure who told me that. So how long does it take to cross the Brooklyn Bridge? Well in fact it only takes 30 minutes and maybe about 45 minutes if you take a few photos and if you really want to milk it, maybe an hour. It took us about 40 minutes in total and I did stop for a few glorious snaps. It wasn’t that bright a day but it was dry and I’d definitely recommend walking across on a dry sunny day. For us it was very windy, but it didn’t ruin the fun of crossing.

How do you cross the bridge?

It’s completely free and you can join either end of the bridge in Manhattan or Brooklyn. There is a walking part to cross above the road where the cars go and it is divided into two. One side is for the cyclists so make sure you stay clear, or you will be subjected to a few cycle bells.

We walked from Manhattan to Brooklyn, with the idea to spend a little time in Brooklyn, we didn’t quite have enough time before our flight, so hopped back on the subway to the hotel at the Brooklyn end. But if you have time definitely have research of the ‘Dumbo’ area and also the Brooklyn Bridge park to spend some time in.

I actually think walking back from Brooklyn could be better as you can see all the skyscrapers ahead of you, of course walking similarly the other way, just remember to turn around! You can also see the Statue of Liberty in the distance.

As I said we walked across on a Tuesday about 3pm, which wasn’t too busy a time and enabled us to get some photo opportunities.

What To Bring?

Comfy shoes, camera and maybe a padlock or headphones (didn’t quite understand this one) if you want to add it to the bridge alongside the others. Not quite the Paris bridge lock but it looks quite cool.

I’m heading to NYC this Summer, and I’ll definitely do this. I’ve been couple of times before but same as you, the time always got overtaken by the shops. Not this time!

I’m so excited to head to NYC in the autumn. Brooklyn and the Brooklyn Bridge are both firmly on the list!
