Fish hairdressing is an institution in Soho, opened in 1987 by founder Paul Burfoot, Paul turned an old sex shop on D’Arblay Street in the middle of Soho into what is now the Fish salon. Where does the name come from? Well when renovating Paul uncovered art deco tiles, which revealed the shop used to be in fact a fishmongers at one point and Fish was born.
From the outside, you can’t help but notice the brand blue tiles and Fish logo. The fish salon has two levels, with the upstairs being slightly smaller than downstairs, the interior is retro and there is a wall of all their products. There are also a number of hairdressing seats, a small waiting area and a slightly more open planned downstairs. The downstairs reminded me of the classic barber shops I used to go to as a kid, mirrors across the walls opposite the barber’s chairs, three sinks to have your hair washed in and iconic pictures above the mirrors of styles gone by.
I was greeted by with smiles and offers of hot drinks, definitely something that is needed in early January now the colder weather has hit us. Maybe not the time to be cutting off my hair! I was greeted by my barber Matt, who was very friendly and showed me to his chair, where he asked me what style I wanted and if I had any specific requests. Matt talked throughout washing my hair and gave a quick but very good head massage, it’s funny how the little details of a good haircut can make your experience far more enjoyable and relaxing from the outset.
The cut was great, Matt used clippers to ensure the sides were short and tight as requested and he really concentrated on scissor over comb to blend the sides into my crown as well as using a number of different cutting techniques to add texture and take the weight out of my hair. Something that stood out was unlike other barbers who rush you out of the chair Matt took great care in ensuring I was happy with the cut and style. He had some great stories and felt like I was having my hair cut from a friend. My hair was finished off with one of my favourite Fish hair products the fishshape texturising cream.
Something I have said in my other barbers reviews in London is I have struggled to find a quality barber that is nearby, that offers a good price and the barber/hairdresser is actually interested in what you say and what you want from your hair. Matt at Fish definitely ticks all the boxes and the sign to myself I really enjoyed the cut and experience is that I will definitely be returning.
Fish offers a gents wash cut and finish from £37 and is open 7 days a week. More at www.fishsoho.com.
