Club To Catwalk – V&A Museum

October 21, 2013

Club to Catwalk is an exhibition currently running at the V&A museum in South Kensington. It explores 1980’s fashion in over 85 different outfits, highlighting different trends in the 80’s club scene such as punk, rave and new romantic which showcases outfits worn by popstar Adam Ant and Leigh Bowery. Catwalk highlights the designers that ruled this period such as Vivienne Westwood, Betty Jackson, John Galliano and Katherine Hamnett just to name a few. The exhibition takes you on a tour through Club and Catwalk and the unique relationship they had with each other helping to create the 80’s style.

This oversized plaid check fabric suit by John Galliano really stood out for me, plus the headgear is fascinating, with what looks like a clock. Galliano apparently spent many hours studying historical dress collections at the V&A, in particular the cut of the 18th-19th century menswear.

I loved all the Blitz denim, something that pretty much wouldn’t look out-of-place today. A lot of the outfits featured are like this, inspiration from the 80’s still appears in today’s fashion and some of it well, pretty glad it’s not!

After the exhibition I took the time to go round the V&A, there is so much to see and some beautiful parts I’ve never discovered yet. How amazing is this door covered in paper windmills that actually moved when the wind machine came on. The lighting is beautiful as soon as you enter the V&A, I love this light structure as you walk in, just look up!
