Last night Pizza Express invited me down to their Holborn branch to get a sneak peek of the new summer menu which launches next Tuesday. It also was a chance to put my skills to the test and make my own Leggera pizza. I am not particularly skilled in the cooking area so figured it would be really fun and maybe I might pick up a few tips!
The Leggera pizza was launched back in 2009 and has become a popular favourite ever since, its thin base and salad in the middle make it the perfect combination for those watching the calories. I am a firm lover of Pizza Express but had never actually tried the Leggera before so was excited to be making it and also try it after!
We joined the group of fellow novice chefs and had a look through the menu whilst sipping on some wine. We got chatting to a fellow blogger Natalie and her friend who were lovely.
The new additions to the summer menu include a Leggera Superfood Salad. The salad has just 295 calories and contains four of your five a day so it’s actually really good for you! Packed with spinach, butternut squash, beetroot, cucumber, avocado, baby mozzarella and topped with balsamic. You can also add chicken to it for that extra protein for just £1.
Other new dishes see gluten-free added to the menu, I have quite a few friends who suffer from Coeliac Disease so its great to know they are now adding gluten-free options, with even a gluten-free beer!
It was then time to get our hands dirty or was that floury! In front of me was a daunting table of flour and a ball of dough….here goes nothing. The chef talked us through the patting, rolling, spreading and flipping of the base, I think mine actually turned out quite well!
We then added our toppings, so I opted for chicken, mozzarella, and pesto, I like to keep it simple. Danny opted for onions and some hot peppers with chicken. They were then whisked away by the chefs and brought back to us all lovely presented with our salad in the middle.
For the first time trying the Leggera I really enjoyed it, the pizza is just enough and the salad helps to fill you up but adds a really good flavour to it too. We also got to try the new Superfood Salad (seen above) which was packed with healthy goodness, accompanied with dough balls and then finishing off with a new dessert. The Mini Oddono’s Raspberry Sorbet complete with chocolate straw, it has been introduced as one of the Dolcetti menu, where you can have a small dessert but also a coffee with it, nice and light for after a meal and only 100 calories.
I had such a fun time making pizza and trying the new menu, I even got to take my sexy apron with me!
The new menu will be available from next Tuesday 30th April, let me know if you go and try it!
