I was invited along to Searcys Champagne Bar at St Pancras station in Kings Cross last night to help them celebrate National Champagne Week which kicks of next week on the 7th-13th October. Searcys have launched this special week to help boost the knowledge and understanding of champagne. It comes after a survey which revealed that 67% of us British folk rate our champagne knowledge as below average. We were going to be doing some champagne tasting so I was looking forward to seeing how my knowledge compared.
Searcys bar at St Pancras station is the longest champagne bar in Europe, I had been to this one once before on a date none the less, so was looking forward to going back. The bar is situated on the top floor, where a long row of booths and nicely lit lamps fill the space, it’s great to take in the architecture of the station and make yourself get in the mood for a trip to Paris on the Eurostar, I resisted to hop on for now.
The first bubbles we tried was the’ ‘Henri Giraud Hommage’, bubbles is definitely the correct word seeing as one bottle of champagne contains over 49 million bubbles. This champagne is said to have the flavours of yellow fruit mixed with dried apricots and a finish of orange zest and chocolate. I took a guess from the list of three we were to try and I got it right! I based my decision on it was very close to Chardonnay and this did in fact have 30% chardonnay, 70% pinot noir, a great first guess.
The next two we tried were the ‘Balfour Searcys Cuvee’ which is created exclusively for Searcys and has hints of apricot, raspberry and strawberry. My favourite of all three was the ‘Laurent-Perrier Ultra Brut’ which is like a ‘diet’ champagne as it has no sugar. It had great flavour and is made exclusively from grapes of very ripe harvests.
We also had a selection of nibbles and some very luxurious truffles to help the champagne go down, yum!
Searcys are hosting a week of complimentary tastings across their Champagne bars which include St Pancras Grand, One New Change, Westfield Stratford and London, Paddington and Blenheim Place from 4-6pm starting on the 7th october. Find out more at Searcys.co.uk.
