I’ve been doing a double cleanse in my skincare routine for numerous years, but it’s not something I’ve always done. It wasn’t until I started blogging about beauty that I really honed in on my routine and what products work best for my skin.
I focused on ingredients I saw gave me results and picked up many great tips from experts, in which double cleansing was one of them.
It may seem obvious to some but I have seen many ask what exactly is a double cleanse? So I’ve broke it down in an easy how to and how I do my very own. Plus I have a 25% off discount code for so you can try it for yourself!
What Is Double Cleansing?
It’s exactly what you think it is and that is cleansing twice – one straight after the other. The first cleanse tends to typically be an oil or balm based cleanser to break down the dirt, make-up and SPF on your face and then you follow with a second cleanser, most likely a gel or cream cleanser to wash it all away and leave your face clean and ready for the next stage.
What Products Should I Use To Double Cleanse?
An oil or balm like product is typically the first cleanse. Why? Because it attaches itself to all the dirt and grime on your face like a magnet and wipes it off.
The First Cleanse
My personal favourite is a cleansing balm and I like to start off with something like the ELEMIS Pro-Collagen Rose Cleansing Balm. I am big fan of the original ELEMIS Pro-Collagen Cleansing Balm but I just love the smell of the rose version and I also find it gentle and hydrating on my skin thanks to the addition of the English Rose Oleo Extract.
I take a small amount of balm in my hands and apply to my face by spreading it out gently for a few seconds and then I will take some water on my fingertips and massage into my face. This will emulsify the balm and you’ll feel it start to melt and look slightly milky. The last step is to wipe away the balm with a flannel, luckily the ELEMIS Pro-Collagen Cleansing Balm comes with a face cloth which is perfect for this.
If you prefer a product with no fragrance then ELEMIS have just released a Limited Edition ELEMIS Pro-Collagen Naked Cleansing Balm, which is a fragrance free version of the balm. It’s safe to use around the eyes and easily wipes away mascara and other make-up, perfect for sensitive skin.
The Second Cleanse
For your second cleanse opt for a cream or gel cleanser. To compliment the ELEMIS Pro-Collagen Rose Cleansing Balm I’m using ELEMIS Superfood Facial Wash. This is a prebiotic gel cleanser rich in vitamins and essential fatty acids to protect the skin’s lipid barrier. In other words it gives the skin a glow and helps protect it from the elements. I apply this to damp skin, rub in and then rinse off.
It has a silky feeling on application and my skin is left nourished and ready for the next steps in my evening routine. I’m a big fan of the ELEMIS Pro-Collagen range and so another great option would be the ELEMIS Pro Collagen Marine Energising Cleanser.
Should I Double Cleanse If I Don’t Wear Make-Up?
It’s really up to you, but I would recommend it if you wear sunscreen every day. Sunscreen is a hard product to remove and it can easily clog pores, so you want to make sure you do that so the next products; your serums, essences, moisturisers can get their benefits on clean skin.
Even if you are inside it’s recommended you do wear sunscreen, especially if you sit near a window all day and I explain more about that in this SPF guide video.
How Often Should I Double Cleanse?
I would suggest just once a day, so for me it’s in the evening to remove make-up and/or sunscreen.
