Crazy Golf – Selfridges Roof

August 1, 2012

Bompas and Parr have turned Selfridge’s roof this summer into a crazy golf course! I had been eager to go since I had first heard about it. Last Friday it was the perfect weather, warm and sunny so I decided to try out my crazy golf skills.

To get up to the roof you have to go in the special lift in the fragrance hall where the two girls will escort you up. When I got out the lift it was sort of like Alice in Wonderland. The walls were covered in large pictures from teacups to cows and actual golf balls and plastic strawberries lined the corridor. Flooring was like carpet except bouncy green fake grass, this Big Rooftop Tea Party was definitely about to kick off.

Golf clubs retrieved, yellow and blue ball chosen and scorecard given in this cute little envelope with the Bompas and Parr logo. We were told it smelt like Bakewell Tart, to which it did. Scented scorecards, amaze. Even the little gold pencil has a slogan “When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro.”

The course set up is inspired by the seven wonders of London. With 9 holes from Big Ben Rebound to Thames Tower Vault and St Pinbaul’s. Each with their own unique cake spin on them. Big Ben looks like it is covered in icing and St Paul’s add a wobbly tricky pinball themed hole made from jellies. But as the scorecard rules state, these obstacles are not to be licked are not also not edible. The floor is all purple fake grass which adds an eccentric effect.

Where else can you be nearly taller than Big Ben?

Some of them are pretty tricky, with only 6 shots each hole, I definitely was not on par! The Tower Bridge I feared, it has actual water and a fountain, with a little net for fishing out your ball should it land in the water, luckily mine did not, hurrah!

The crazy golf ends with The Vortex which is the big Gherkin building. What happens to your ball, well I’ll let you find out. I ended with 14 above par, probably NOT the best, but I had a little celebratory cheer anyway.

After golf we had built up an appetite so decided to take advantage of the Daylesford cafe on the roof too. I had a Pimms which was super refreshing after my sporting adventures and a large piece of carrot cake. They have a range of cakes, afternoon tea’s and drinks which was perfect on a warm day.

Back through the magic corridor as I will now call it, the gnome seat and was one of my favourite touches.

Bompas and Parr are renowned for their spectacular experiences and this one does not disappointment. I recommend checking it out. It runs until September and tickets can be bought through the Selfridge’s website.
