BIRD opened its doors on Kingsland Road in East London back in June and in the four months its been open has been serving up one of my favourite things, fried chicken! Now this isn’t your run of the mill fried chicken that you pick up after a heavy Saturday night on the town, no this is premium fried chicken, made from quality free range chicken delivered from British farms and it’s also gluten-free with the glazes being hand-made in the kitchen. BIRD has captured it’s owners Cara Ceppetelli and Paul Hemings love of all things fried chicken and has taken influences from some of the best fried chicken restaurants in Chicago, Brookyln, Philedelphia and also Asia
Inside BIRD it was much bigger than I had expected, the space is open and inviting and the design works really well, with bricks walls and large booth seating areas.
We settled into a booth and had a look at the menu. Whilst still deciding on food we ordered some cocktails, The Dark & Stormy and Two One Two. A bit of rum and tequila is always a good way to start off a Saturday evening.
The menu itself is easily laid out and you can choose from pieces of chicken, white, dark or mixed and add the glaze and sauces of your choice. The same goes for the wings. Then you have offerings of chicken and waffles, the fried chicken sandwich with kewpie mayo, the waffle and chicken burger, salads and plenty of sides including mu shu pancakes and gem lettuce cups. We first decided to start with four wings in the original buffalo sauce. The chicken was absolutely delicious and the glaze was lovely but for me I am very sensitive to spice so was a bit strong – I’m a wimp, but Danny loved them. I think next time I might try the honey-ginger.
Up next I went for four pieces of chicken, with sauces and fries. The chicken was cooked perfectly and the soy-garlic sauce was just heaven and went with it so well. Danny went big and I was completely jealous once it came out. The chicken and waffle burger is what man versus food is made for, it was really, really big! Filled with boneless thigh bits of chicken, thick cut bacon, cheddar and onion waffles, hot sauce and syrup. It looked amazing and tasted it too. I much prefer waffles when they are more on the savoury side than sweet with chicken so this was perfect. Danny managed to finish it all, make sure you are hungry!
Of course there is always room for dessert, Danny went for some strawberry ice-cream and I chose an ice-cream sandwich with vanilla ice-cream and vanilla doughnut. BIRD also has a doughnut hatch which opens for doughnuts and coffee from 8am every day. The doughnut was so good and yummy and a great way to finish off our meal.
