Is YSL Tatouage Couture The Best Liquid Lipstick?

November 1, 2017

When it comes to YSL and lipstick we are good friends, in fact best friends. I absolutely adore YSL lipsticks. Rouge Pur Couture in No.1 is the perfect red lipstick and it’s a pretty lovely addition in my make-up bag with its stunning gold shiny case. So with that said it doesn’t surprise me that when it comes to liquid lipsticks, YSL have absolutely nailed it.

I’m a big fan of liquid lipsticks, well most of them. I think the formulas are getting better and better from each brand. Some favourites for me include Kylie Cosmetics (the velvets), Smashbox and Guerlain’s most recent launch. I was intrigued to try YSL’s new offering, the Tatouage Couture collection. The range has 18 matte liquid lipsticks with a high pigment pay-off and are described as to leave the ultimate lasting mark. The colours range from pink and red to purple and coral and they still have the shiny gold YSL packaging.

Now the first thing that took me aback with these lipsticks was the applicator. I had never seen one like it. It’s shaped sort of like a spatula with sharp lined sides and if you look closely each side has the YSL logo on it. Talk about attention to detail. The idea of this shape is for an even application and also so that you don’t require a liner. I found the applicator really easy and gave a very even distribution of the product and was easy enough to line my lips perfectly. I was also able to go over areas and give my lips a plump look.

The consistency of the product is again surprising. It’s more like a stain that a creamy liquid lipstick, or maybe quite gel like but not as thick. It goes on very thin, but so pigmented. Some liquid lips can dry down matte and look pretty awful in 60 seconds and what I mean by that is they highlight every wrinkle and line on your lips. This does not do that at all, it’s a matte look but it stays with a slight sheen. It just looks effortlessly good and the lips look plump and wonderful. I absolutely loved the end result and the way it looks after application.

The name of this product refers to a tattoo, so let’s talk about the wear time. I wore this lipstick throughout the day and there was no feathering or smudging, even when eating. I aways get lipstick under my mouth when eating and that didn’t happen it all. After eating and drinking it did wear off a little in the inner section, but I was impressed by how much it had stayed on and with a little top up it looked as good as new. The darker colours did transfer when I touched my lips, but the lighter colours didn’t seem to.

My favourite colour is No.12 Red Tribe which I am wearing here. I love a red lipstick and it’s even better when it’s long-lasting.

I was very happy with how long-lasting these lipsticks were, but it’s the applicator and the consistency that definitely make it stand out as one of the best liquid lipsticks I’ve tried all year.
