David Beckham has teamed up with L’Oreal to create his very own grooming line House 99. The House 99 brand was two years in the making and is named after ‘the year David became a man’. The range has 20 products, broken down into hair, beard and face.
I challenged myself to test out three of the House 99 products for ten days to see how good they were. I picked the thickening daily shampoo, the seriously groomed and brand defence face moisturiser.
House 99 Going Big Thickening Daily Shampoo Review
The House 99 shampoo instantly stands out as it is a black coloured shampoo and if you have ever used a thickening shampoo before it instantly feels like a thickening shampoo. Going Big has charcoal powder in it which gives you the black colouring and peppermint extract which is popular in many more expensive shampoos.
The Going Big Shampoo was designed to volumise your hair and it definitely does do that, whether you dry with a hairdryer or let it dry naturally it does add volume. I wouldn’t suggest using a texturising spray or thickening spray if you use this before styling.
The product does what it says on the label, it does clean your hair pretty well but it did struggle to really clean my hair after using a thicker wax product, so well worth applying more shampoo or double washing your hair if you use a heavier product.
Going Big Shampoo is priced at £16.00 and at that price it compares to something like the Paul Mitchell Double Hitter.
House 99 Seriously Groomed Beard and Hair Balm Review
Seriously Groomed is the product that David has said is his go-to product out of the range. It is unusual with the hundreds of beard products that a balm isn’t something that is commonly available. Seriously Groomed is a non-sticky cream (balm), it is lighter than your typical hair wax and it has the texture of a hair styling creme, with a small amount going a long way. It works best if you have a dry beard and then apply from root to tip and move throughout your beard.
Seriously Groomed is designed for you to tame your beard and ensure at whatever length facial hair you have you can shape and condition it. House 99 recommend it can be used as a conditioner, like a leave-in conditioner for short or medium length hair. Just remember it is not a styling product.
Seriously Groomed is priced at £17.00 and works well, I don’t think it is something you will buy more than three times a year so could be worth the investment if you like the product and want to keep your beard tamed. Seriously Groomed compares well with the Clinique 2 in 1 skin hydrator and beard conditioner.
House 99 Broad Defense Face Moisturiser Review
This is my favourite product from the range so far. It is a multi-purpose face moisturiser and something that makes it stand out against a like for like moisturiser is that it has SPF 20 in it, which helps to protect your skin against UV rays. Many products at the same price point do not offer SPF. The Broad Defense was also developed to fight against pollution and has anti-oxidants.
The moisturiser is creamy and lightweight so it dries in quickly and means if you have a slightly lazy routine you can apply on the way out of the door. If you judge a product by the smell you are in luck as it smells pretty good.
The House 99 Broad Defense is priced at £22.00 so isn’t the cheapest moisturiser on the market however against similarly priced products I would say it is worth buying it and then you can test yourself against your other moisturisers.
House 99 is available now exclusively at Harvey Nichols.
