The Bodyguard

January 20, 2013

Last night I went to see The Bodyguard at the Adelphi Theatre, as you can guess it is a remake of the 90’s movie featuring Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner. If you haven’t seen the film it tells the story of superstar Rachel Marron who hires bodyguard Frank Farmer to protect her from a potentially dangerous stalker.

I wasn’t sure what to expect and how they would portray it apart from a bunch of Whitney Houston songs, but what I saw was a spectacular performance of cast and production!

I don’t want to say too much as you really have to go and see it but the start of the show kicks off like no other (this is me saying TOO much) and the end is the best ending I have seen of a show yet!

Leading lady playing Whitney aka Rachel Marron is played by Grammy winner Heather Headley who was phenomenal, Her voice is absolutely amazing not unlike Whitney’s, singing every song with hardly a move of her lips! Kevin Costner’s character Frank Farmer is portrayed by Lloyd Owen who does a great job of the elusive bodyguard. Every cast member was truly great, the part of Rachel’ sister and her son really stood out for me.

Some of my favourite Whitney tracks including Queen of the Night, Run To You and I Have Nothing were done to perfection. The set changes were pretty amazing, from a snowy log cabin to a set from the Oscars!

I was tempted nearly to get up on stage when Frank takes Rachel to the karaoke bar and to hide her identity calls her Paula then asks for ‘Paula’ to take the mic!

The Oscars scene sees the bad guy pop out in the crowd with a very dangerous gun so look out for him!

My seats were four rows from the front so I could see every facial expression and was really involved in the action, there was tons of dry ice, I started to feel like I was in a club at one point.

The end of the show saw a standing ovation, not many shows get this so it was great to see, plus plenty of dancing in the aisles by me mainly!

The show has just extended its run from end of April till September, I would highly recommend going to see it, just don’t blame me if you can’t get Whitney songs out your head the next day!
