Pimms & Punting

May 21, 2014

Last weekend I went to Cambridge to visit Michelle who is staying there for the summer. I’ve never been to the city before so it was really nice to go somewhere new and plus the weather was perfect, just over 23 degrees! I headed there for early afternoon and so the first port of call was to catch up over lunch at a new restaurant called Coast. It is basically a posh fish and chips shop and we ordered our fish and chips and some large glasses of wine which was delicious.

After stuffing our bellies we decided to walk it off with a stroll around the town. Cambridge reminds me slightly of St Andrews, I guess maybe being a University town, but with much more shops. There are plenty places to shop, all your usual ones like Ted Baker, Reiss, H&M and some rare finds. We came across this little gift shop that sold some lovely clothes and jewellery, it reminded me a bit of Oliver Bonas but a bit more unique. One thing to watch out for is the bikes. They are everywhere, so make sure to check if you are walking on a bike pathway or not!

Kings College Cambridge

Kings College is such a massive building and looked really beautiful in the sun and with the trees surrounding it. There was also a graduation happening, with the graduates in their gowns with white furry hoods and celebrating with their families.

We got approached by one of the punting promoters and we knew we definitely wanted to go punting, so signed up straight away! So punting if you are not aware is where you go on a small boat along the river, a bit like Venice just less romantic and you can see all the colleges as you go along and history of Cambridge.

Cambridge Punts

Before setting off we grabbed a couple of cans of Pimms and set sail with our punter. There is about 8 people to each little boat or if you prefer to have your own you can also rent the punts but then you have to drive it yourself, which looked awfully hard work and not for the faint hearted as we were regularly bumping into some that had lost control! However our guy was a professional punter and so we sailed smoothly down the river, taking in all the sights, colleges and bridges and buildings.

He even decided to do his first jump of the year, they are known for bridge jumping so he decided to do it twice to impress the little boy on our boat or maybe it was the ladies aboard!? He climbed up from the boat onto the bridge and back over to jump onto the boat, pretty impressive!

After punting we headed for more drinks and then dinner at Strada for some pizza before I caught the train back to Kings Cross. It only takes 45 minutes on the fast train from London, so no doubt I’ll be going back again soon!
